Solar Street Lights in South Africa: Free Quotes for Estates, Farms and Roads

Free quotes from solar street light suppliers and installers across South Africa. One request, no obligation.

Solar street lights light roads, parking areas, paths and perimeters without trenching cables or paying for grid connections, and they keep working during load-shedding. They suit estates, farms, schools, clinics, municipal projects and rural roads. SolarPanel.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and your request goes to independent suppliers and installers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not sell or install anything ourselves, and there is no fee or obligation.

Types of solar street light

Two designs dominate the market, and each has its place.

  • All-in-one lights: the panel, LED, battery and controller sit in a single head on a pole. They are quick to install and good for roads and paths.
  • Split-system lights: a separate panel and battery box mount on the pole, which allows larger batteries and panels, and easier replacement of parts.

Smaller areas and gardens are covered under solar lights, while wide security coverage suits solar flood lights.

Spacing, pole height and light levels

Pole height and spacing decide how evenly a road is lit. A typical pole is 4 to 8 metres tall, and fittings are usually spaced about three to four times the pole height apart, though the supplier will work out the exact figure for your layout. Bigger spacing leaves dark patches, while very close spacing wastes money. Light distribution patterns (road, area or path) matter as much as raw brightness.

For a public or estate road, ask the supplier about the expected light level at ground, the number of nights of autonomy with no sun, and whether the lights dim after midnight to extend battery life.

Poles, foundations and wind

A solar street light is a sail on a stick, so the pole, base plate and foundation matter. Concrete foundations are sized to the pole height and the local wind speed, and coastal areas need galvanised or coated steel to resist salt. Panels should face north in South Africa and be tilted for year-round capture, with no shading from trees or buildings.

  • Anti-theft bolts and tamper-resistant fixings protect the battery and panel.
  • Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries cope better with heat than older chemistries.
  • Municipalities may need approval before you erect lights on a road reserve.

What affects the price of solar street lights

The cost per light depends on the LED output, panel and battery size, the pole height and material, the foundation work, and the number of lights ordered. Remote sites add transport and crane costs, and special features such as dimming, motion sensing or remote monitoring change the total. Because layouts vary so much, suppliers must quote for your site, and we do not publish prices.

Ask each supplier for a layout drawing, the warranty on the battery and panel, and how replacement parts are sourced if a unit fails.

What to include in your request

  • Length of road or area to be lit
  • Preferred pole height and spacing
  • Number of nights of autonomy needed
  • Wind exposure and coastal location
  • Whether you need foundations and erection

Solar Street Lights at different properties

  • Family homes: solar lights for a cul-de-sac, shared driveway or community park where the municipality has no budget
  • Estate homes: evenly spaced poles along internal roads and walkways, with controlled glare and trustee approval
  • Townhouses and flats: pole lights over visitor parking and complex access roads, installed with body-corporate consent
  • Farms, smallholdings and lodges: lights along farm roads, worker housing and loading areas, with no cable trenching across fields
  • Shops, offices and schools: pole lights over car parks and entrances that stay on during load-shedding
  • Factories and warehouses: perimeter and yard pole lights for depots, mines and factories, often in larger numbers

Frequently asked questions

How long do solar street lights stay on at night?

Most are designed to run from dusk to dawn, and many can dim or use motion detection to save power. A supplier should state the nights of autonomy the system gives after cloudy days.

Are solar street lights a good choice for estates and farms?

Often, yes. They avoid trenching and new cable runs, and they keep working during outages. The supplier will check the spacing and mounting so the road is evenly lit and the poles are secure.

Does the site pay anything to use SolarPanel.co.za?

No. It is a free quote service with no obligation. We pass your details to independent suppliers who quote directly, and we do not sell, supply or install any lighting ourselves.

Do I need approval to install street lights?

On private land you usually do not need municipal approval, though an estate may need trustee or HOA consent. On a public road or reserve, you must get permission from the municipality first.
