Solar System Maintenance and Repairs: Free Quotes from Local Technicians

Free quotes from solar technicians and installers across South Africa. One request, no obligation.

Solar systems have few moving parts, but they are not maintenance-free. Inverters trip, batteries age, connectors loosen and output slowly slips. SolarPanel.co.za is a free quote service. Fill in one form and we pass your request to independent solar technicians and installers in your area, who contact you with a quote. We do not repair, install or service anything ourselves. There is no fee and no obligation, so you can compare several quotes before deciding who looks at your system.

Routine solar maintenance: what a service check covers

A routine visit catches small problems before they become outages. A technician will typically:

  • Inspect panels for cracks, discolouration, hot spots and damaged frames.
  • Check roof hooks, rails and clamps, which can loosen in wind and with heat cycles.
  • Look at DC and AC cabling, connectors, isolators and surge protection for wear, rodent damage and heat marks.
  • Read inverter logs and error history, and check firmware.
  • Test batteries for capacity, balancing and terminal condition.
  • Check earthing, labels and the distribution board.

Many installers offer a yearly maintenance plan. Panels can also be cleaned at the same visit, and our solar panel cleaning page covers that separately.

Common faults and when output drops

If your solar efficiency seems low, work through the likely causes before assuming the panels are failing.

  • Dirt or new shading: a tree that has grown, a new building, or a layer of dust.
  • Inverter faults: overload, grid-voltage trips, fan failure or a firmware issue. Repeated trips on the same fault code need a technician.
  • Battery ageing: reduced backup time, early shutdowns or a battery management system that keeps cutting out.
  • Loose or burnt connectors: these cause lost power and are a fire risk, so do not ignore them.
  • Faulty strings or modules: found by testing voltage and current per string.

Fault finding needs proper test gear and training. Do not open inverters or battery cabinets yourself.

Inverter repairs, battery replacement and upgrades

Some inverters can be repaired, and others are cheaper to replace once they are out of warranty. A good technician will tell you which. Warranties vary and are often voided by unqualified work, so check the terms before anyone touches the unit.

Batteries lose capacity over time. Replacing them may mean matching the chemistry and voltage to your inverter, and changing from lead-acid to lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) usually needs settings and sometimes hardware changes. See our page on lithium solar batteries if you are considering that.

If you are adding panels or batteries to an old system, the existing wiring, protection and registration may need updating too. Work on a grid-connected system should be done by a registered electrician, and an updated Certificate of Compliance may be needed.

What affects the cost of solar repairs

We do not quote prices here, because a repair can mean anything from a tightened connector to a new inverter. Quotes depend on:

  • The fault, and how long diagnosis takes.
  • Parts needed, and whether they are in stock locally.
  • Whether the equipment is still under warranty.
  • Roof access, height and number of visits.
  • Travel distance, especially for farms and remote sites.

Give the make, model and any error codes in your request so technicians can price accurately.

What to include in your request

  • Inverter and battery make and model
  • Any error codes or symptoms
  • Age of the system and warranty status
  • Installer who originally fitted it
  • Roof access and site location

Solar Maintenance and Repairs at different properties

  • Family homes: a home inverter that keeps tripping, or batteries that no longer last through an evening of load-shedding
  • Estate homes: larger hybrid systems checked yearly so roof arrays, cabling and batteries stay tidy and compliant
  • Townhouses and flats: small inverter and battery setups needing fault finding without disturbing neighbours or shared roofs
  • Farms, smallholdings and lodges: off-grid or pump systems checked for dust, rodent damage, loose connections and tired batteries
  • Shops, offices and schools: rooftop and backup systems serviced so tills, servers and cold rooms keep running during outages
  • Factories and warehouses: large arrays and inverter rooms inspected, thermal-scanned and serviced to limit downtime and lost generation

Frequently asked questions

Does SolarPanel.co.za repair solar systems?
No. We are a free quote service only. You submit one request and we forward it to independent solar technicians and installers in your area. They contact you directly with their quotes. We do not repair, sell or install equipment, and there is no cost or obligation to you.
How often should a solar system be serviced?
Many installers suggest a check about once a year, and sooner if the system trips, output falls or batteries run flat early. Systems near the coast, on farms or in very dusty places may benefit from more frequent visits. Follow your installer's and manufacturer's guidance.
Why is my solar system producing less than before?
Common causes are dirty panels, new shading, an inverter fault, a failing string or an ageing battery that limits what the system can store. A technician can read the inverter data and test each string to find the actual cause.
Can I repair the inverter or batteries myself?
No. Inverters and battery banks hold dangerous voltages and stored energy, and unqualified work can void warranties and insurance. Have a competent technician or registered electrician do the work, and tell your insurer if the system changes.
