Solar Panel Price in South Africa: Compare Free Quotes
Free quotes from solar suppliers and installers across South Africa. One request, no obligation.

The solar panel price you will be quoted depends on far more than the panels. SolarPanel.co.za is a free quote service. You send one request and we pass it to independent installers and suppliers near you, who quote you directly. We do not sell, supply, install or service anything ourselves, and there is no fee or obligation. We also do not publish rand amounts here, because they date quickly. Instead, this page explains what moves the price so you can read quotes with confidence.
How solar panels are priced
Suppliers usually price panels per panel or per watt, while installers quote a complete job. These are different things. A price for panels on a pallet leaves out mounting, cabling, protection devices, labour and compliance work. When you search for the cost of solar panels in South Africa, check whether the figure is for panels only or for an installed system. A quote for an installed system should list every item, so ask for a breakdown. Panels are often a smaller part of the final bill than people expect, and the rest of the quote deserves the same attention.
What changes the price of solar panels
Two homes with the same number of panels can still get very different quotes. The main reasons are below.
- Panel class and warranty: established manufacturers with longer product and performance warranties usually cost more per panel.
- Panel size and number: larger modules mean fewer to mount, but heavier lifts.
- Roof type and height: tile, slate and steep or multi-storey roofs take more time and special hardware.
- Distance to the inverter: longer cable runs mean more cable and more labour.
- Availability: stock levels and the exchange rate affect what suppliers charge.
What else is in a solar quote
Panels are only part of a system. Quotes often include an inverter, batteries, a distribution board upgrade, surge protection and an earth system. There may be scaffolding, travel costs for remote sites, and the Electrical Certificate of Compliance. If the system connects to the grid, there is also municipal or Eskom registration for small-scale embedded generation.
If you run a business, ask your accountant whether tax allowances such as Section 12B apply. For help working out system size, try our solar calculator first.
How to compare solar panel quotes
Request quotes from at least three installers and give each the same information. Then compare:
- The panel brand, wattage and warranty terms.
- The total system size in kWp, not just the panel count.
- The inverter and battery specification, if included.
- Who does the work, and whether the installer holds a PV GreenCard or is registered with the right trade bodies.
- What is covered if something fails after installation.
The cheapest quote is not always the best, and the most expensive is not always the most thorough. Our page on solar panels has more on the options.
What to include in your request
- Say if you want panels only or a full installation
- Give your roof type and storeys
- Share your monthly kWh use
- Ask for itemised quotes
- Ask what warranties apply
Solar Panel Prices at different properties
- Family homes: a quote covering a rooftop array sized to the household, with mounting and compliance listed separately
- Estate homes: quotes that allow for design-rule compliance, neater cable routing and sometimes engineered roof checks
- Townhouses and flats: smaller quotes where body corporate approval and shared roof access affect the scope of work
- Farms, smallholdings and lodges: quotes that factor in distance, site access and whether panels are roof or ground mounted
- Shops, offices and schools: quotes based on daytime consumption, often with tax allowances to discuss with your accountant
- Factories and warehouses: large-scale quotes priced per kWp, with engineering, grid approval and structural checks included
