Solar installers and suppliers by area

Find solar installers, inverter and battery suppliers and solar geyser fitters in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and every other province.

Installers and suppliers on our network work in all nine provinces, from the sunny Northern Cape to the cloudier KwaZulu-Natal coast. Choose your province or town to read about local sunshine, the electricity supplier's rules and what people install there, and request a quote.

Gauteng

Gauteng sits on the sunny Highveld, with clear, dry winter days and strong sun for most of the year. Power comes from several suppliers: City Power in Johannesburg, City of Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and a number of smaller municipalities, with Eskom serving some outer areas. Each one requires grid-tied and hybrid systems to be registered or approved before they are connected. Roofs range from concrete tile and IBR sheeting on houses to flat concrete on offices and warehouses. Summer afternoons bring hail and lightning, so mounting strength, surge protection and insurance deserve attention. Hybrid backup, solar geysers and large commercial rooftops are all popular across the province.

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga has two faces. The Highveld around the coal and power station towns is sunny and dry in winter, while the Lowveld near Mbombela is hotter, humid and cloudier in summer. Electricity is supplied by Eskom in many areas and by municipalities in the larger towns, and a grid-tied or hybrid system must be registered with whichever one serves the property. Lodges, citrus and sugar farms and mine-town houses make up much of the demand. Highveld hail and lightning, Lowveld heat and heavy summer storms all test mounting and cabling. Solar geysers, borehole pumps and hybrid backup systems are in steady demand in this province.

North West

North West is among the sunniest parts of the country, with long dry spells, clear skies and very hot summers. Eskom supplies many towns and rural areas directly, while municipalities such as Rustenburg, Matlosana and Tlokwe handle their own networks, and each has its own embedded-generation approval process for grid-tied and hybrid systems. Farms use solar for borehole pumps, irrigation, dairies and cold rooms, and mine-town homes and businesses want backup power. Heat and dust reduce output if panels are left uncleaned, and summer thunderstorms bring hail and lightning. Roofs are mostly IBR sheeting on farm buildings and concrete tile on town houses, with open ground for mounting.

Limpopo

Limpopo gets abundant sun for most of the year, with hot summers and mild, dry winters, so panels have plenty of strong light to work with. Eskom supplies large parts of the province directly, with Polokwane and a few other municipalities running their own networks, and grid-tied or hybrid systems must be approved by whichever one applies. Game lodges, citrus and vegetable farms, mine-linked businesses and town houses all install solar, and borehole pumps and solar geysers are especially common. Extreme heat lowers panel efficiency and ages equipment, dust settles quickly, and summer storms bring lightning and some hail. Lodges often choose off-grid or hybrid designs because the grid is far away.

Northern Cape

The Northern Cape receives some of the strongest sunshine in South Africa, with very little cloud and long hours of clear sky through the year. Eskom supplies most rural areas, while Sol Plaatje, Dawid Kruiper and other municipalities run their own networks, and each requires embedded-generation approval for grid-tied and hybrid systems. Distances are huge and grid power can be weak or far away, so off-grid systems, borehole pumps and farm installations are common, along with solar for mines, guest farms and town businesses. Extreme heat, dust, strong wind and cold desert nights are the main conditions to plan for. Roofs are mainly IBR sheeting, and ground-mount space is plentiful.

Free State

The Free State is sunny and dry for most of the year, with clear winter days that stay cold at night and hot summers with strong irradiance. Mangaung is served by Centlec, Matjhabeng, Metsimaholo and other municipalities run their own networks, and Eskom supplies much of the rest. Grid-tied and hybrid systems must be registered with whichever supplier applies. Farms use solar for borehole pumps, dairies, grain handling and shearing sheds, while towns see hybrid backup and solar geysers. Hail and lightning on summer afternoons, hard frost and strong dry wind are the main weather concerns. Roofs are mostly IBR sheeting on farms and concrete or corrugated sheeting in towns.

KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal has a humid, cloudier coast, warm midlands and cooler Berg foothills, so output varies more than on the dry inland plateau, though summer sun is still strong. eThekwini supplies Durban, Msunduzi serves Pietermaritzburg, and Eskom covers much of the rest. Grid-tied and hybrid systems need approval from whichever one supplies the property. Coastal salt air corrodes cheap fixings and frames, so stainless hardware and marine-grade products matter, and strong wind and summer storms need solid mounting. Roofs include concrete tile, IBR and clay tile on houses and flat roofs on apartment blocks. Hybrid backup, solar geysers and commercial rooftops on warehouses are popular here.

Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape runs from the windy coast to the dry Karoo edge, and sunshine improves steadily as you move inland, with the coast more changeable and often breezy. Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City run their own networks in Gqeberha and East London, while Eskom and other municipalities supply the rest, and each has its own approval process for grid-tied and hybrid systems. Coastal salt air and strong wind are the main concerns, so corrosion-resistant fixings and well-secured arrays matter. Roofs are mostly IBR and concrete tile. Hybrid backup, solar geysers and borehole pumps on farms are common, and motor industry sites look at commercial rooftops.

Western Cape

The Western Cape has hot, dry, very sunny summers and wetter, cloudier winters, so solar output is strong in the warm months and lower in the cold, rainy ones. The City of Cape Town supplies its own area and requires embedded generation to be registered and approved, with other municipalities and Eskom covering the rest of the province, each with its own rules. Coastal salt air corrodes fixings, and the south-easter in summer puts real load on roofs and arrays. Roofs include slate, clay tile, concrete tile and IBR, and wine farms, fruit farms and heritage homes each have their own needs. Hybrid backup, solar geysers and farm pumping are popular.
